Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I need a LOLER inspection?
This is entirely dependent on the type of equipment, and there are specific time periods for each type. However, the environment that the equipment is used in can also have a factor, as can the type of use. If you have a heavily used crane in a harsh environment for example, a diligent owner would want it checked more frequently than a rarely used crane in a dry building. Our experts are always on hand to verify what the regulations state, whether it is a 6 monthly inspection or an annual inspection that is required to keep you compliant, and we are always available to carry out a site inspection to see if those time periods are suitable for your needs.
Is it a test or an inspection?
Much confusion arises from the words used to describe what is required in the LOLER regulations. Equipment is required to have a “thorough examination” periodically. This can involve a visual inspection (looking for damage, cracks, wear etc.), a function test (using the item as intended to check it functions as the manufacturer designed it to) or a load test (adding a specific amount of load to a piece of equipment to see if it performs as expected). Newly installed equipment, or equipment that has been moved, can be subjected to a proof load test, which puts the equipment into a calculated over-load situation to verify that it is safe to use. And equipment that is suspected to have fine cracks or hidden defects can be subjected to NDT or Non Destructive Testing. The competent person usually decides how far the testing needs to go to be able to say whether the item is safe to use of not, but there are situations, as mentioned above, where some form of testing is required and measurements like deflections should be recorded. Some equipment, like safety netting, should be inspected every 6 months, but also tested on a test rig annually to check for UV degradation. Fall arrest blocks that use a wire rope are similar, they should have an inspection every 6 months, but should also have an annual service carried out by the manufacturer to check the internal mechanism. We can advise on all of this type of information - ask us about your equipment today!
